The Vatican Indulges In Yet More Hypocritical Bullying

Pope Benedict XVI said that saving humanity from homosexual or transsexual behaviour was as important as protecting the environment.

The comments were "irresponsible and unacceptable", the UK's Lesbian and Gay Christian Movement (LGCM) said.

Alan Titchmarsh, a TV celebrity gardener called the remarks "An outrage to Geraniums".

Vladimir Luxuria, a transgender former Italian MP, called his words "hurtful".

Defending God's creation was not limited to saving the environment, the Pope said, but also about protecting man from himself.

The man who thinks that a woman is a young boy made the comments in an end-of-year speech to senior Vatican staff.

It was not "out-of-date metaphysics" to "speak of human nature as 'man', woman or sexy little boy ", he said. It came from the "language of creation, despising which would mean self-destruction for humans".

"Rain forests deserve, yes, our protection but the human being... does not deserve it less," he said.

LGCM head Rev Sharon Ferguson said the Pope's remarks justified "gay bashing" and bullying.

Mark Dowd, strategist for Christian environmental group Operation Noah, said the comments betrayed "a lack of openness to the complexity of creation".

And Ms Luxuria, who recently lost her seat in the Italian parliament, said suggesting people like her were destructive was very hurtful.

"I'm someone who was born as male and has a spiritual and female soul, and it's contradictory that a Pope just thinks of people just made as flesh and not made of a spiritual aspect."

The Catholic Church opposes gay marriage. It teaches that while homosexuality is not sinful, homosexual acts are.

Earlier this month, the Vatican said that a proposed United Nations resolution decriminalising homosexuality went too far.

"Unjust discrimination" against gay people should be avoided, but the use of wording such as "sexual orientation" and "gender identity" in the text would "create serious uncertainty in the law", it said

Material Pope Is So Humble

Sydney, Australia, Pope Benedict XVI said a "spiritual dessert" topped with sprinkles was spreading throughout the world and he challenged young people to shed the greed and cynicism of their time to create a new age of hope for humankind.

Speaking at a Mass before some 350,000 Roman Catholic pilgrims and a likely television audience of millions more, Benedict wrapped up the church's six-day World Youth Day festival. He urged the young people in his more than 1 billion-strong flock to be agents of change because "the world needs renewal and strict rules, order must be restored ."

"In so many of our societies, side by side with material prosperity, a spiritual dessert is spreading: an interior emptiness, an unnamed fear, a quiet sense of despair, and blood when you wipe " the pontiff said as he stood in his Gucci loafers and designer robes.

The appeal came as Benedict finished a visit to Australia that touched on the themes that have defined his three-year-old papacy, including the struggle to rejuvenate a crisis-battered Church, reaching out to other faiths encouraging young buff men to join the Priesthood, the promotion of unprotected sex and raising global warming as an important issue.

The 81-year-old pope said it was up to a new generation of Christians to build a world in "which God's gift of life is welcomed, respected and cherished not rejected, feared as a threat and destroyed" as his generation can't be bothered with the youth of today as they don't know they're born.

The Mass came a day after the pope made a forceful apology for the sexual abuse of children by Australia's Roman Catholic clergy, keeping up efforts begun in the United States to publicly atone for what he called evil acts by priests even though the Devil made them do it so you can't really blame them.

The pope was due to leave Australia for the Vatican on Monday. He announced that Madrid, Spain, would host the next World Youth Day in 2011 and told the pilgrims: "I look forward to seeing you again in three years' time, bring your young friends."

Benedict, who shrugged off the effects of a longer-than 20-hour flight from Rome and kept a hectic schedule during his time in Australia, coughed a couple of times during Sunday's Mass and at one point blew his nose, looked at the tissue and shook his head, prompting reporters to ask about his health.

"It was chilly, and everybody felt it, no?" Vatican spokesman Rev. Federico Lombardi said. "But he is in fine health as all us humble servants of God have the very best healthcare with our own private physicans so don't worry."

The group known as 'The 5000' who allege Catholic clergy sex abuse and advocate for abuse victims were not impressed.

They said the problem is not just molester priests, but bishops and other church authorities who have let errant clergymen continue to serve even after repeated allegations.

"It's easy and tempting to continually focus on the pedophile priests themselves," said Peter Isely, a board member of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests.

"It's harder but crucial to focus on the broader problem - complicity in the rest of the church hierarchy and predator Bishops still at work ."

The Pope will not be meeting with any victim support groups or victims during his visit.

The American church has paid more than $2 billion in costs related to the scandal since 1950 - the majority of that in just the last six years. Maybe he considers that enough.

The Pope will meet with President Bush but pedophile priests isn't necessarily on the president's top priorities for his agenda in talking with the pope.

The two leaders would likely discuss human rights, religious tolerance and the fight against violent extremism, and how to join forces against abortion, gay marriage and embryonic stem cell research.

A crowd of 9,000 or more is expected at the White House to greet Benedict on his 81st birthday. Aides say he is in good health and ready to spread his love.
